Summary

Laborers (LiUNA) Local 955 is a union of workers fighting for better wages and working conditions in mid-Missouri. LiUNA Local 955 members work at the City of Centralia, City of Columbia, University of Missouri – Columbia, University of Missouri Kansas City, MU Healthcare, Truman State, City of Kirksville, MFA Feed Mills in Mexico & Kirksville, and Wildcat Materials workers. 

Organizers are responsible for conducting internal, and sometimes external organizing campaigns by organizing workplace committees, making home visits, performing worker assessments, planning and carrying out worksite organizing and comprehensive campaigns. Organizers will be expected to target issues, identify workplace leaders and recruit them as union stewards and leaders to win better wages, benefits and working conditions for our members and the broader Missouri community. Finally, organizers will engage in external and internal organizing campaigns where there are clear goals for signing union cards. 

This is a full-time position with a three month probationary period. This is a salaried position. The minimum salary is $50,000 a year with retirement and health insurance at no cost to the employee.

Note: applicants with community and labor organizing background may be eligible for additional compensation. 

Responsibilities

 

  • Meets goals and deadlines.
  • Promptly return phone calls, especially to members.
  • Performs related work as required.
  • Recruit and develop worksite leaders. 
  • Visits job sites to communicate with workers.
  • Visits workers in their homes. (House calls, door knocking.)
  • Have one on one and group conversations with workers, signing them up to join the union. 
  • Work weekends, evenings and early mornings as the needs arise. 
  • Travel to Kirksville, Mexico, Centralia and Kansas City as needs arise. 
  • Travel to conferences and trainings semi-annually when needs and opportunities arise.

Requirements

  • A commitment to working class movement-building.
  • Reliable transportation.
  • Willingness to have difficult conversations with people of creed, color, religion and political ideologies.
  • This is an entry level position — you are not expected to be ready to go and fully trained.
